Hymns for World Mission Sunday (2nd to last Sunday in October)

$
0
0
This is a set of hymn and song suggestions suitable for use on Mission Sunday - on any other day when there is a focus on missionary work.

What is Mission Sunday

In the Roman Catholic Church (and possibly others) the month of October is dedicated to prayer and support of the Church's missions in general, and especially missionary work which is done overseas. During the month, people are told about the Church's missionary activity abroad and asked to support it through prayer, sacrifice and financial contributions.

This focus is centred around Mission Sunday which is observed on the 2nd to last Sunday in October each year.   (This is often described as the 3rd Sunday - but in 2011 October has five Sundays, and it was on the 4th one.)

The changing dates for Easter means this falls on a different Sunday of Ordinary Time (ie in the liturgical calendar) each year.  For example in 2014 and 2015 it is the 29th Sunday of Ordinary time, while in 2011 when it was on the 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time.

Because of this, the hymn suggestions are based on the general themes of evangelisation, mission and support for missionaries, rather than any particular Gospel cycle.

Why this three month period

Planning in these three month periods matches both the liturgical and secular seasons :
  • Feb - Mar - April (includes Lent and Easter)
  • May - Jun - Jul (spring / summer in Europe, winter in the southern hemisphere)
  • Aug - Sept - Oct (Back-to-school = start of a new year in Europe)
  • Nov - Dec - Jan (New Year and summer-holidays in the south, people get together in late January to plan for the rest of the year).

If this combination doesn't suit your church, then it may be better to use the blank music roster template.

The next version, for February - April 2016 will be available in mid January.  Leave a comment below if you have requests about what else it should include.

Words (full text) of the prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I pray that you may fortify me with the grace of your Holy Spirit, and give your peace to my soul, that I may be free from all needless anxiety and worry.

Help me to desire always that which is pleasing and acceptable to you, so that your will may be my will.

Grant that I may be free from unholy desires, and that, for your love, I may remain obscure and unknown in this world, to be known only to you.

Do not permit me to attribute to myself the good that you perform in me and through me, but rather, referring all honour to you, may I admit only to my infirmities, so that renouncing sincerely all vain-glory which comes from the world, I may aspire to that true and lasting glory that comes from you. Amen

A selection of hymns and songs suitable for use during the season of Advent.

Most are free-to-use, ie public domain or copyright-free, meaning the words can be copied and sung to at least one tune with no concerns about copyright or performance licensing.

A small selection of hymns that are still copyright, but are especially suitable, may also be included.

Seasonal note

The season of Advent is a time of expectant waiting:  not penetential, but nevertheless still more restrained than either Ordinary Time before it, or the Christmas season.

There are a number of themes which appear in the Advent readings in each year of the liturgical calendar, including preparing a way for the Lord, and imploring him to "come".

These suggestions are appropriate for the entire season, rather than being directly tied to the readings on a particular day.
